Living with a hearing loss

Everyday life is in many ways the same for people with hearing loss and those with normal hearing. Every day has its rhythm with different activities, arrangements and tasks. Some days you are full of energy, other days you don’t have so much.

The difference is that communication requires an extra effort for people with a hearing loss. This is due to the extra ‘listening work’ required to continuously try to make out what is being said.

Moreover, people with a hearing loss have to deal with the prejudices associated with hearing loss. Both things can make heavy demands on both body and psyche, and give rise to problems that need to be overcome.

It is, however, easier to overcome challenges when you acknowledge that they exist, and you tell others how they can help.

In the following pages, you can read more about typical reactions to hearing loss and get advice on how to live a full life with hearing loss or how to help and support hearing impaired family members.
